Learners investigate a media institution of their choice to find out about the institution’s: a) ownership b) operating model c) products d) market position e) competitors

Below is the research I did to create the infographic.

a) Ownership

/Users/student/Downloads/NBC_Universal_Television_Logo_2011.png
Universal Television is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal Television Group which is a division of NBCUniversal, an American multinational media conglomerate.

They
Co-produce the show with Fremulon, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Dr. Goor Productions to create Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

b) Operating Model

Universal Television is the producer of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. They are a subsidiary company of NBCUniversal whose headquarters are at the Comcast Building in New York, USA. NBCUniversal Media LLC is a private company and is a division of Comcast. Key personnel include Roy Meyer, the Vice Chairman, and CEO, Steve Burke.

Universal Television President is Pearlena Igbokwe.

The show is distributed by FOX to Netflix, Amazon Video, iTunes to stream/buy/rent, to the FOX channel in the USA, and Channel 4 in the UK.

c) Products

Other television shows by Universal Television include Sitcom-Mockumentary Parks and Recreation, Sitcom-Comedy The Mindy Project, and Dramas Parenthood, Chicago Fire and Bates Motel.

Ratings on Rotton Tomatoes:
Parks & Rec - 90%

Mindy Project - 87%
Parenthood - 90%
Chicago Fire - 87%
Bates Motel - 93%

d) Market Position

Made by Universal Television (NBC) but distributed by FOX. Fox has a lucrative demographic of 18-49-year-olds. Fourth major network in the US. Reduced weekday programming. Lacks national morning/evening new programs. doesn't feature daytime programming. No late-night/Saturday morning kids programming. Up against the Big Three - ABC, CBS, and NBC

e) Competitors

Online streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Video are competitors to NBCUniversal but are also collaborators in that they open up a new branch of consumers to the product.

As NBCUniversal does not have an online streaming service with a large consumer base, it is more profitable for them to license the product to Netflix

  1. For market share you need to look at its direct on air competitors and then other shows in the genre that are on VoD
