Learners analyse the demographics of the target audience for their chosen media product, identifying the audience’s: a) gender b) age c) lifestyle d) spending power.

Audience Survey

I used google forms to create a survey to gather information about the audience of the show.

The questions covered the following sections:
a) Gender
b) Age
c) Lifestyle
d) Spending Power

Results:

A) Gender

The majority of the audience is male, suggesting that they are the target audience for the show. I was expecting more of an equal percentage of the number of men and women due to the representation of women in the show.

B) Age

From this data, I would say that the target age range is 19-21-year-olds with the secondary audience ranging from 22-29-year-olds which is quite a large range of the show's audience.

C) Lifestyle

According to this data, the main target audience is Americans who have online streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu and are mainly interested in comedy shows, namely The Good Place as well as Parks and Recreation both of which were also created by Michael Schur.

Quite a large amount is interested in sports and outdoor activities suggesting they are quite active people. That being said, watching movies/show was the most popular indoor activity so they are also not opposed to staying in and lounging about.

There is also a fair amount interested in creative activities such as photography and writing, as well as more technological ones - web browsing, gaming, social networking. This provides a basis for the advertisement of the show as the audience is familiar with using the internet.

D) Spending Power

The majority of the audience is employed while a similarly large amount is students. This means a great deal of the audience is unable to earn as much as the other because they have college/school to attend and so are only able to get a part-time job if one at all. They may also rely on their parents for their spending money and so are likely limited in spending power. The majority of the audience does not have much spending power anyway, with 40% earning less than £20,000 of household income yearly. This amount does not leave much money left for luxuries when you factor in bills/taxes. (See Customer Profile for more on spending power)
