Furthermore, the show has a strong Episodic Narrative, meaning that the plot of the episode wraps up within that episode - You do not need to watch every episode to understand the storyline. This narrative is often found in a lot of sitcoms.

This still is taken from one of the cold openings of the show. The character within the still is Jake, an officer who works in the 99th precinct as can be seen from his badge. He has just greeted his cower and best friend Boyle and asked about his weekend. Boyle incorporated a pun into his answer, eliciting this response from Jake. His expression is unimpressed and quite stoic, portraying his displeasure at Boyle's pun. This is emphasised by him having his hands placed on his hips in a condescending manner and his lack of movement. The shot his a midshot with the background out of focus so the viewer knows that Jake's reaction is the focal point and so that they can see his body language.

Like the before still, this is a midshot with the background out of focus so that Boyle is the centre of attention. Boyle is attempting to hold back his amusement at his own joke as can be seen by him pursing his lips. This reaction makes Jake's more amusing due to the complete contrast between them. Furthermore, with this shot, you get to see a bit more of the precinct. Behind Boyle is the kitchen area which is quite messy and disorganised. There are also quite a lot of posters/flyers on the fridge. This suggests to the viewer that the precinct is quite a relaxed/disorganised environment which is understandable because the people working there work very long shifts and there are a large number of them so a lot of mess/rubbish would accumulate and the officers/staff would likely decorate the precinct to make it feel more homely as they spend the majority of their time there.

The camera then cuts back to Jake and zooms into a medium close-up so that Jake's face can be seen more clearly and the audience his brought further into Jake's emotions as the space around him gets smaller. The zoom also helps to build up the tension to the release in the next shot. The complete lack of change in Jake's demeanour from the first still to this one accentuates his lack of amusement at Boyle's joke.

The last shot supplies the release. The camera zooms in to build the tension and bring the audience further into Boyle as they did with Jake. Finally, Boyle loses his ability to keep in his amusement and lets it burst out, allowing the release of the joke that Jake failed to give him and the audience.
For my video essay, I chose to analyse a clip of one of the show's cold openings as I feel that they embody the style and feel of the show and tend to involve the majority of the main cast.
